In 2007 my farm was in the grip of a drought. Located in Mildura, Australia, we had not had reliable rains for several years and our water allocation was reduced to a level that made it impossible for us to viably grow grapes.

So I decided to look for an alternative cropping system.

I did some research and discovered that Aquaponics was said to use the lowest amount of water for the growing of crops. So I decided that I would look into it further.

I contacted Martin and Kerri from the Aquaponics Shop and told them that I was interested in a commercial system. They visited me in Mildura and I agreed to move forward and commission them to design, supply and install my system.

In December 2007 the build started and it was completed in January 2008. I got my first 1200 fingerlings (1000 Silver Perch and 200 Murray Cod) at the end of January 2008 and planted my first several hundred seedlings.

Demand for my aquaponic produce has been amazing!

We started providing Basil to a local producer of high quality Pesto. She was very impressed with the basilt and has now given us a standing order. In the past she has not had a steady supply year round – but we have solved that for her.

It will take until December 2008 before our fish will be ready for sale but we have already had a enormous amount of interest in them. Both fish species are well known, and liked, in this area so the fact that they are growing in clean, unpolluted water makes them very popular.

Currently we are growing:

There are hundreds of plants that we can grown in our system. If you are interested in having me provide you with a good supply of chemical free produce, all year round, then please contact me.

Early in March, 2008, we did a launch of our system and I was very thankful that the Sunraysia Daily and ABC Rural Radio took the time to come. We appreciated the fact that they attended and even more that they have supported us by doing a newspaper article and radio interview respectively. You can read the article from the Sunraysia Daily by clicking on the image of it here. The ABC Radio interview went to air on ABC Rural Radio in mid-March.

Finally we have been so impressed with The Aquaponic Shop and their systems that we are now their local representatives for the Riverina and Riverland. If you would like us to help you with a home system that will meet your needs then please contact me.
